CHICAGO -- Leadoff hitter Angel Pagan was out of the Giants lineup for a second straight day because of back inflammation. Manager Bruce Bochy said Pagan had an MRI that revealed no structural damage, but his back was still stiff Tuesday, keeping him from even taking batting practice before the opener of a two-game series with the White Sox.
"We're trying to get this under control," Bochy said. "He was making a little progress, but not as much as we would hope."
Pagan has missed several games this season with a sore knee, and has often had ice on his knee and back after games. He is hitting .307 but has just four hits in his past 24 at-bats.
The Giants are all too familiar with back injuries this year. Marco Scutaro has missed the entire season with persistent back soreness and Buster Posey has twice missed time with a nerve problem in his lower back.
