The Oakland High boys basketball team has had to pull out late wins time and time again this season.

Monday was no different as the Wildcats overcame a five-point deficit in the last two minutes of the game to slip by Deer Valley 60-59 in the nightcap of the Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have A Dream Classic" at Laney College.

"When we get down late like that, the boys don't let up because they've been in this situation all year," Oakland coach Orlando Watkins said.

The Wolverines (13-4) went on a 9-0 run to take a 59-54 lead culminated by a free throw by Andre McPhail with 1:49 left.

Jabari Brown, who scored 17 points, picked up a loose ball and went in for the dunk and then added a 16-foot jumper to pull the Wildcats (11-5) within a point at 59-58 with 59 seconds remaining. After forcing a turnover, Oakland got the ball back, and T.J. Taylor was fouled with 30 seconds left, where he made both free throws to give the Wildcats a one-point lead.

Deer Valley tried to go inside but was turned away on four occasions. The ball went out of bounds, and the Wolverines retained possession with 5.5 seconds left.

Charles Smith missed a 3-pointer from the corner, but Olajuwon Garner got the long rebound. His 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

McPhail had a phenomenal game for the Wolverines, finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Garner added 18.

UC Santa Barbara-bound Dominique Taplin led the Wildcats with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Berkeley 70, Oakland Tech 60: Yellowjackets senior point guard Joshua Amey scored six of his eight points in a key second-quarter run that gave Berkeley (12-3) the lead to stay in the "I Have a Dream" Classic.

The Yellowjackets broke a 23-23 tie with a 14-2 run to end the first half against the Bulldogs (13-4). Amey also had six of his eight assists in the first half. Berkeley led by at least six point throughout the second half and by double digits in all of the fourth quarter.

"Josh is our leader, and when he is playing well and seeing the court the way he does, we have a lot of weapons," Berkeley coach Damion McNeil said.

"We knew we had to put a run together, especially with Langston (Morris-Walker) on the bench," Amey said.

Morris-Walker, who scored seven of his nine points in the first quarter, received his third foul with 7:44 remaining in the first half.

In the second half, teammate BT Shabazz took over. He scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in that half. Jalil Eppenger added 17 points for the Yellowjackets.

James Harris paced Oakland Tech with 15 points.
