PINOLE -- The Pinole Valley High football team didn't provide much offense on Friday night in their Tri-County Athletic League game against St. Patricks/St. Vincent. But thanks to their defense, they didn't need much.
The Spartans (2-4, 1-1 TCAL) held the Bruins (1-5, 0-2 TCAL) to 35 yards rushing and kept them out of the end zone, riding the leg of kicker Jonathan Bui to a 3-0 win.
Bui bailed out his team with a 21-yard kick near the end of the first quarter. On that drive, Pinole started at their own 22 yard line, and went on a drive that lasted 10 plays and ended at the Bruin five yard line, setting up the kick. Once they had the lead, the Spartan defense got tough and limited the Bruins to three-and-out drives on three of the next five possessions.
The Spartans used the running of Isaiah Lewis in the second half. The junior back totaled 110 yards on 12 carries in the game. The Spartans got down close twice in the fourth quarter in an attempt to pad the lead.
The first time was at the start of the fourth quarter when they got the ball to the one-yard line on an eight-yard run by quarterback Devin Davis. On the play Davis was injured and his back up, Rashad Brown, then fumbled the next snap turning the ball over.
Then after forcing a Bruin punt, they went on a time consuming drive, starting at their own 45 and came to an end at the 22 after nine running plays. Bui then attempted a 39-yard field goal but missed wide left with two minutes left in the game.
But as the Bruins tried one final drive, they got no where and after four failed pass attempts the Spartans were able to run out the clock.
