Tyrell Carrigan's 97-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left secured the sixth straight Island Bowl win for the Encinal High football team, which beat crosstown archrival Alameda 22-15 at Thompson Field on Friday night.
Every year, the Encinal-Alameda game is the No. 1 sporting spectacle for the city of Alameda, drawing standing-room-only crowds and generating passion and excitement on both sides of the island. And this year's 58th annual edition was especially memorable.
Alameda, for its part, had its hopes raised high when Chris Bussey caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Lewis with 5:23 left in the contest. James Knight's 2-point conversion run opened a 15-14 lead for the Hornets (2-3).
Alameda dominated possession in the first half, but had only a 7-0 lead -- on Adam Awa's 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter -- to show for it at halftime.
Encinal (4-2) came out with a fury after the break, scoring on its first two possessions of the third quarter -- a 4-yard run by Austin Ve'e and a 1-yarder by Isaiah Hunter..
Statistically, defenses were tough for both teams. Carrigan finished with 106 rushing yards for Encinal, the bulk of it on his winning touchdown run. Lewis completed seven passes for Alameda, all of them to Bussey, for 78 yards.
