Cameron Birse passed for 188 yards and three touchdowns, but it may have been the Wolves' defense that made the biggest plays of the night in leading San Ramon Valley to a victory over Granada.
The Wolves (3-3, 3-0 East Bay Athletic League) made their first big play on defense in the second quarter by stopping Granada's Casey Soltis about a foot short of the end zone on a fourth-and-goal play from the 2-yard line, preserving an 8-0 lead. Then the San Ramon Valley defense rose up again in the fourth quarter, this time with Ryan Dunn intercepting Granada's Tyler Offill and sprinting all the way to the Matadors' 29-yard line.
Four plays later, Birse hit Matt Turner for his third touchdown pass of the night, putting San Ramon Valley ahead 22-0 and all but sealing the win.
"I feel like our hard work is paying off," Wolves' coach Mark Kessler said. "We were able to make some huge plays on defense against a very good Granada team."
The Wolves were able to turn their goal-line stand in the second quarter into a 99-yard drive that led to Birse hitting Marcus de la Pena from a yard out to go ahead 15-0 just before the half. Birse was 8 for 8 on the drive, including four completions to JJ Koski, who led SRV in receiving with six catches for 73 yards. Granada (3-3. 0-2) was able to mount several successful drives throughout the game but was unable to convert key fourth-down situations and had three costly turnovers in the second half. The
