The Pittsburg High football team scored on its first four possessions and rang up 229 yards on the ground in the first half to help earn a 42-29 over host Deer Valley on Friday night in a Bay Valley Athletic League game.

Craijon Menefee led the Pirates rushing attack in the first half with three touchdowns and 56 yards. Harris Ross added 107 yards rushing as the Pirates, who endured an emotional 49-48 loss to Freedom last week, had a 28-14 lead at the break.

For Deer Valley in the first half, Nsimba Webster threw for 122 yards and two touchdowns and also led the Wolverines with 95 yards rushing. There were no turnovers by either team in the first two quarters.

Menefee scored Pittsburg's first two touchdowns. The first came on a 2-yard run with 8:54 left in the first quarter, then he had a 10-yard touchdown run that gave Pittsburg (5-3, 2-1) a 14-0 lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

Deer Valley (6-2, 2-1 BVAL) got on the board with a touchdown pass from Webster to Nzuzi Webster with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. But with 6:14 left in the first half, Menefee scored again as the Pirates reclaimed their 14-point lead.

Pittsburg's last score of the first half came on Lorenzo Renteria's 8-yard bootleg with 48 seconds left.

Deer Valley is on the road for its final games of the regular season. The Wolverines travel to Oakley to face Freedom on Oct. 26 in another big BVAL contest, and play at Heritage on Nov. 2. Pittsburg also closes out its season on the road, playing at Heritage next Friday and at Antioch in the Big Little game on Nov. 2.

Freedom 55, Antioch 9: In the first half, running back Joe Mixon carried the ball 14 times for 142 yards and scored three touchdowns, including a 73-yard punt return, as the host Falcons dominated the Panthers.

Freedom running backs Marcel Zanders and Malik Jackson also contributed touchdown runs of 2 and 14 yards, respectively, in the first half, and quarterback Dante Mayes completed 4 of 8 passes for 111 yards in the first two quarters.

Zanders led the defense at linebacker with three sacks of Antioch's Hunter Karnthong in the first half.

Karnthong completed 13 of 26 passes for 113 yards and kicked a 25-yard field goal as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Freedom (6-2, 3-0 BVAL), which has won five straight, hosts Deer Valley next Friday and plays at Liberty in the Bell Game on Nov. 2. Antioch (5-3, 0-3) closes its regular season with two games at home, against Liberty next Friday and Pittsburg on Nov. 2.

Heritage 35, Liberty 0: The Patriots forced four turnovers and held the host Lions to just 85 yards of offense in the first half as they earned their second straight BVAL win. Heritage remained unbeaten in the local rivalry, moving to 6-0 all-time in the Brentwood Bowl.

In the first half, Heritage senior quarterback Anthony Carter completed 10 of 14 passes for 139 yards -- including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Travon Covington-Zeno to give his team a 14-0 lead midway though the second quarter. Julian Johnson added another touchdown late in the second quarter as Heritage took a 21-0 into intermission.

Mason Sargent got the Patriots (2-6, 2-1 BVAL) on the board in the first quarter, scoring on a 9-yard run to give Heritage a 7-0 lead over the Lions (2-6, 0-3) with 3:11 left.

Despite having lost its first six games of the year, Heritage can now qualify for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs by winning one of its final two regular season games -- both of which are at home. The Patriots play Pittsburg next Friday and Deer Valley on Nov. 2.
