Marty Leggett scored three touchdowns, two on runs from scrimmage and another on an interception return, and Riley Pivin passed for two more as the host Cougars never trailed in this North Coast Section Division II first-round playoff game

Newark Memorial (9-2) opened the scoring on Pivin's 13-yard pass to Damien Banford in the back of the end zone with 5:07 left in the first quarter.

Leggett's 30-yard interception return opened a 14-0 gap early in the second quarter. And his touchdown runs of 9 and 65 yards extended the Cougars' lead to 27-8 by halftime.

Jon Kapu had a 26-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, and Aaron Miller closed the scoring with a 21-yard run in the fourth.

Eric Adair scored American's only touchdown on an 87-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. Ryan Barker's 2-point conversion run trimmed the Eagles' deficit to 21-8 at the time.

Leggett led all rushers with 82 yards. Miller added 66 and Mark Morton 57 for the Cougars.

Robert Pinkney finished with 55 rushing yards for the Eagles (5-6). Drew Lyell added 48 for American.
