CONCORD -- Behind Elliott Pitts and its trademark defense, the host De La Salle High basketball team set the tone early coasted to a 42-25 victory over Berkeley on Friday in the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals.

After the sixth-seeded Yellowjackets scored the first basket of the game, De La Salle (24-3) put together a 17-2 run and never saw its lead sink below double digits the rest of the night.

Berkeley (16-12), which had not scored less than 44 points this season, was held to just 12 points through the first three quarters.

"Our goal tonight was to really come out and defend," De La Salle coach Frank Allocco said. "I thought the first half we really rebounded well. It was a whole team effort on the boards, and that probably was the key tonight -- our defensive rebounding."

The No. 3-seeded Spartans now face No. 2 Deer Valley in Wednesday's semifinals. Deer Valley, which got past No. 7 Heritage 81-62 in its Friday quarterfinal game, beat De La Salle 55-38 on Dec. 8.

Pitts was the force behind the big first-half run for the Spartans. He scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter. He also finished the game with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

"This was a good game for us," the senior swingman said. "It should give us a boost and have us ready for Deer Valley or whoever we get next week."

Justyce Key led Berkeley with 10 points. This was the first playoff meeting between the teams since the Yellowjackets beat the Spartans 59-50 in a 2005 semifinal.
