SAN ANSELMO -- With temperatures reaching well into the 90s on Saturday, it was as important as ever to take advantage of each opportunity.
With that in mind, the Drake High football team rallied at halftime to defeat Kennedy-Richmond 21-14.
"It was really hot, and really kind of an ugly game where no one could really do much," said Drake coach Ethan Hough. "You could just see guys were walking around out there and exhausted and beat by the heat."
The game got off to a quick start -- three touchdowns on the first four possessions of the first quarter -- but by the start of the second quarter Kennedy (0-1) had taken a 14-7 lead.
Kennedy receiver Francisco Ortiz took the ball into Drake territory to start the second half, and an 18-yard run from Ernie Timoteo (144 rushing yards) brought the Eagles up to the 27-yard line before Devon Hallinan recovered a fumble to set up one of the biggest plays of the day.
On the next play, Drake quarterback Kevin Miles (11 for 21, 263 passing yards) threw downfield to senior Myles Morford, who didn't start the game and hadn't yet played this season. The wide-open Morford caught the pass and ran it into the end zone to tie the game.
"He told me before the play, 'Look for me, I'm going to be there. I'm going to gas it down the sideline,'" Miles said. "He just turned it on. I've never seen him run so fast. That was a tremendous play, that made the game."
"Going into the locker room at the second half, we were exhausted," Morford said. "We were talking, the whole team was talking ... we got our second wind. Kevin hit me on that beautiful pass, instantly that sparked us, then Devon (Hallinan) came with the run."
After Morford's touchdown, Kennedy was forced to punt on its next possession -- a punt that was returned to the 31-yard line. Alex Huber advanced the Pirates (2-0) to first and goal, but sprained his ankle a play later and had to leave the game. Hallinan ran the ball in for the final touchdown of the day, which Morford called a total team effort.
"Our defense played so solid in the second half," Morford said. "And our lineman. Our lineman were tearing it up -- (Kennedy) had some big lineman -- and in that heat I don't know how they did it."
"In this heat, there were times I'm sure the kids wanted to quit," Hough said. "We fought through it and now it's going to feel great tonight."
