Huge fourth quarter lifts California

  • The California High football team reeled off 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn a 31-17 win over host Pittsburg on Nov. 30 in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals. The victory avenged a 35-33 loss to the Pirates on Sept. 6. Spenser Thompson-Meyers started the Grizzlies' late surge with a 28-yard field goal. Next, C.J. Cornwell had an 8-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Matt Lorenz, who scored on a 5-yard run to increase the lead to 31-10, along with Thompson-Meyers' fourth extra point. The Grizzlies (11-2) will face De La Salle (12-0) in the championship game on Dec. 7 at Dublin High. The Spartans beat California 55-0 on Nov. 8.

    Wolves fall in NorCals

  • The San Ramon Valley girls volleyball team lost a five-set thriller against visiting Palo Alto in the first round of the CIF Northern Regional Division I playoffs on Nov. 26. The scores were 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-7. San Ramon Valley (33-4), the NCS Division I champion, got a brilliant effort from senior setter Kate Bailey, who had 52 assists, five digs and two aces. Senior Noelle Vleisides had two aces, 10 kills, two blocks, and eight digs.

    Mustangs, SRV finish close at state meet

  • Friendly Danville rivals, the San Ramon Valley and Monte Vista girls cross country teams finished in close proximity in the Division I girls race at the CIF State Championships on Nov. 30 in Fresno. Monte Vista sophomore Brooke Starn was the top East Bay runner in the 3.1-mile race at Woodward Park, placing 17th in a time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds. The Wolves, led by NCS Division I champion Christine Bayliss, who placed 39th, finished 17th, two spots ahead of the Mustangs.

    Las Positas nets win

  • Former Amador Valley player Jacob Contreras, a sophomore guard, hit five 3-pointers and had 19 points as the Las Positas College men's basketball team beat Hartnell 92-77 on Nov. 30 for the Hawks' first road win of the season. Jayson Rose had a team-high 22 points. The Hawks (3-3) will travel to powerful San Joaquin Delta (4-1) on Dec. 5.

    Dublin soccer rolls

  • Courtney Leca had a hat trick and an assist as the Dublin girls soccer team beat Richmond 7-1 in a nonleague match on Nov. 25 to improve to 2-0. In boys soccer, Dublin improved to 5-0 with a 3-0 win over Northgate on Nov. 26

  • California vs. De La Salle, football, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m. -- The EBAL champion Grizzlies get another crack at the mighty Spartans.

  • California at Dougherty Valley, boys basketball, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. -- The local rivals will meet in an early nonleague game. The Wildcats beat the Grizzlies 58-50 last season.

  • Kate Bailey, San Ramon Valley volleyball -- Bailey, a senior, had 53 assists in the Wolves' tough loss to Palo Alto in the CIF Northern Regional playoffs on Nov. 26.

  • C.J. Cornwell, California football -- The speedy Cornwell had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, in the Grizzlies' win over Pittsburg in the NCS Division I semifinals on Nov. 30. Cornwell had 33 yards rushing and 81 yards receiving.

  • Rickimae Torres, Dougherty Valley tennis -- Torres seeded third, dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to No. 1 seed Allison Chuang of Albany in the NCS Division I singles championship match on Nov. 25.

  • Megan McCandless, Granada cross country -- McCandless finished 30th in the Division I girls race at the CIF State Championships on Nov. 30 in Fresno, in a time of 18:24.
