San Ramon Valley High guard Jerry Karczewski hit a 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds left in overtime to give the Wolves a thrilling 59-56 win over previously unbeaten Monte Vista Tuesday night in an East Bay Athletic League boys basketball game.

Monte Vista (18-1, 6-1), which is ranked second in the Bay Area News Group East Bay boys basketball poll, attempted a long shot from the opposite free throw line at the final buzzer in overtime that just missed.

San Ramon Valley 6-foot-10 center Gregg Polosky banked in a shot at the final buzzer in regulation to tie the score 50-50 and force overtime. The Wolves (16-3, 5-2) played strong defense on Mustangs standout guard Trevor John, limiting him to five points.

San Ramon Valley, which is ranked seventh in the Bay Area News Group East Bay poll, parlayed team defense and rebounding to produce the upset.

"I thought they outplayed us," Monte Vista coach Nick Jones said of the Wolves.

A packed gym at San Ramon Valley provided a memorable setting for the exciting finish.

"Great environment," Jones said. "Great win for San Ramon Valley. They beat us. Hats off to them. They made plays, and we didn't."

Karczewski had a game-high 19 points, Polosky had 13 and David Gunn 12 for the Wolves. The Mustangs were paced by Grant Jackson's 16 points and Spencer Rust's 13.
