SAN ANSELMO -- Matt Thomas scored eight of the Acalanes High boys basketball team's 10 points in overtime as the Dons knocked off host Sir Francis Drake 64-61 on Friday to advance to the North Coast Section Division III semifinals.

With four minutes left in the game, Drake was trailing and had Jesse Hunt sidelined due to a sprained ankle. Hunt (26 points) entered back in the game and scored the final eight points in regulation for Drake and forced overtime.

"That's what gamers do," Drake coach Doug Donnellan said of Hunt. "We didn't know if we were going to get him back, but that's who he is."

It was in overtime that Acalanes' top scorer, Buster Souza (25 points), fouled out. That's when Thomas stepped in to help knock off fourth-seeded Drake. No. 5 Acalanes will play at No. 1 Bishop O'Dowd, an easy winner over Encinal on Friday, in the semifinals on Wednesday.

"Buster's a great player and he has every piece to his game," Donnellan said. "And Thomas was unconscious. He hit real tough shots with guys on him and that's what Acalanes has been doing the past few weeks and all the credit goes to them."

Acalanes had jumped out to an 11-3 lead to open the game but Drake closed it to 27-24 by halftime before the late game fireworks got underway.

From the coach: "It was exactly what high school basketball in the playoffs should look like," Donnellan said. "Two teams that battle and give it their all. It was like that old cliche' that neither team deserves to lose."
