OAKLAND -- In a game that was close throughout, the Pleasant Grove High girls basketball team edged Oakland Athletic League champion McClymonds 45-43 on Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Northern regional playoffs at Laney College.

"We knew it was going to be a tight game," Pleasant Grove coach James McKeever said. "We just tried to ride all the peaks and valleys."

The final minute of the game featured plenty of drama. After Brittany Nguyen hit a free throw with 9.8 seconds left to put up Pleasant Grove by two, McClymonds (16-13) had an opportunity at the other end, but missed a shot and two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining after McKeever called his final two timeouts in succession.

Pleasant Grove (22-9) was led by junior guard Kim Schmelz, who had a team-high 14 points. McClymonds got another monster game from center Da'Ja'Nay Powell, who scored 22 points despite being double-teamed throughout.
