LAFAYETTE -- Buster Souza had 15 points and 15 rebounds but the host Acalanes High boys basketball team faltered down the stretch in 60-46 loss to Christian Brothers-Sacramento in the first round of the CIF Division III Northern regional playoffs.

Acalanes (17-13), which was making its first appearance in a Northern regional playoff game since 2007, was tied with Christian Brothers after three quarters, but was outscored 23-9 in the final period.

"I just think Christian Brothers was a little more hungry," Acalanes coach Bill Powers said. "It came down to missed shots, offensive rebounds, putbacks and they just had a different sense of energy than we did."

The first three quarters were back-and-forth.

Acalanes led early by feeding its big man, Souza, in the paint. He scored eight of his points in the opening quarter.

Christian Brothers (21-10) then stormed back by connecting on 3-pointers on five straight possessions to start the second period. The Falcons led 28-22 early in the third quarter before the Dons went on an 8-0 run to take a 30-28 lead.

But the fourth quarter belonged to Christian Brothers. Joseph Delgadillo drilled a 3-pointer early on to give the Falcons the lead for good, and Acalanes managed just two field goals in the final eight minutes.

Delgadillo had 17 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Christian Brothers.

Matt Thomas added 12 points for Acalanes.

Despite the loss, Acalanes posted an enormous turnaround in Powers' first year as head coach. The Dons were 8-18 a season ago and didn't even make the North Coast Section playoffs.

"The last eight minutes was not indicative of the season," Powers said. "It was a group of six seniors and they put the team on their back and really were a team. We were resilient and when we had tough losses, we'd always come back and improve."
