BURLINGAME -- Jackson Wegener made two foul shots with 10.6 seconds left to give the Miramonte boys basketball team, and the Matadors held on for a 78-76 victory over third-seeded Burlingame on Saturday night in the CIF Division III Northern regional quarterfinals.

Miramonte, the No. 12 seed, advances to play at Sir Francis Drake, a 69-62 winner over No. 1 seed Sacred Heart Cathedral, in the Division III semifinals on Tuesday.

No. 3 Burlingame (26-5) trailed by 10 in the third quarter, but rallied behind the fourth-quarter shooting of Frankie Ferrari to take a 73-69 lead with less than three minutes remaining.

A 3-pointer by Ferrari gave Burlingame its last lead at 76-74. But Miramonte (16-12) closed it out by making 4 of 6 from the line over the final 45 seconds.

"This is a high-character group," Miramonte coach Drew McDonald said. "They've made fantastic late-game rallies all season. The guys never stop believing."

It was Miramonte's second NorCal road win, following a 74-70 win in overtime at No. 5 Fairfield.

"We play in a tough league,'' Anderson said. "In the regular season we got more losses than we should've, but that's why even though we're a lower seed that we can play with these guys.''

Burlingame opened a 10-point lead early at 14-4 and was up 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. But Miramonte turned the game around in the second quarter, closing the half on a 14-1 run to take a 38-33 lead.

Miramonte's all-out fast-breaking style, pushing the ball after Burlingame makes and misses, took a toll on the Panthers.

"We practiced that over and over, but you can't simulate it in three days of practice," Burlingame coach Pete Harames said.

Ferrari scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 29.

But he missed three shots in the final minute as Burlingame's season came to an end.

"I got pretty good looks on all of them, I just couldn't get them to fall," Ferrari said. "We played our hearts out. If a shot falls here or there, we win. We made a great run in the fourth quarter, but we just came up short."

Justin Gutang added 21 points for the Panthers. Miramonte's Drew Anderson scored 34.
