PLEASANTON -- The bats came alive for the Amador Valley High softball team and Johanna Grauer pitched yet another shutout in a 10-0 win over California that was shortened to six innings by the run-rule.
Usually one of Amador Valley's biggest challenges in East Bay Athletic League play, Cal High suffered a blow when Cal Poly-bound pitcher Lindsey Chalmers felt shoulder soreness during warmups.
She was scratched from the lineup and an anticipated pitching duel between two future Division I players never materialized.
"We're not going to take a risk like that with someone like Lindsey," Cal coach Joe Callaway said.
Instead, the UCLA-bound Grauer dominated, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. She has nine shutouts and has yet to give up an earned run this season in the Dons' 14-0 start.
"I think she's mixing up her pitches more and using a lot of additional pitches compared to last year," Amador Valley coach Teresa Borchard said. "I think she's smarter and more experienced."
Grauer also went 2 for 3 at the plate as the Dons tallied 11 hits. Sammy Salustri and Katelynn Moore also had two hits each and both scored twice.
The Dons got all the runs they'd need in the second inning. Victoria Molina led off with a single, reached second on a wild pitch, and came home on Moore's RBI single. A walk, passed ball and an error allowed two more runs to score in the inning.
Moore drove in another run with a single in a five-run fifth inning when Amador Valley batted around. The Dons had four hits, walked twice, and were helped by some shaky defense in the frame.
The game ended with no outs in the sixth inning with pinch hitter Ashley Balestreri's RBI single.
The 10 runs were a season high for Amador Valley, which can typically get by scratching just one run across the plate with Grauer in the circle.
"We hit and we stayed up through the whole game and stayed aggressive," Borchard said.
