Archbishop Mitty girls basketball coach Sue Phillips has been named coach of the U.S. women's team that will compete this summer in the under-17 world championships in the Czech Republic.

The competition will be held in Klatovy and Plzen from June 28 to July 6.

Phillips coached the U.S. under-16 women's team to a gold medal last summer.

In a USA Basketball release, Phillips said she is "humbled and excited" to work the team and staff.

  • Pinewood girls basketball coach Doc Scheppler was selected as Cal-Hi Sports' state coach of the year for winning his 500th game and leading the Panthers to a sixth state championship, which tied a state record.

Scheppler is 504-111 in 19 seasons as Pinewood's coach.

Pinewood won the Division V state championship this season, making Scheppler the first to receive Cal-Hi Sports' honor in a season in which the coach's team competed in Division V.

  • Eric Luescher is returning as Silver Creek's football coach after a four-year break. He replaces Chris Bolding, who stepped down after last season.

Luescher, who coached the Raiders for 15 years, said he has stayed involved with the program over the years and will coach with the staff that he worked with previously.
