OAKLAND -- Pitcher Joe Mueller threw a complete-game one-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Lowell High-San Francisco baseball team dominated Oakland Tech 9-0 in the first game of the TransBay Series at Rickey Henderson Field.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs remain confident, as the best-of-three series moves to San Francisco State at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
"In two of the last four years, we lost the first game and came back to win it," said first-year Tech coach Bryan Bassette. "As a team and individually, we have the personnel to bounce back. It's not over yet. That's why it's a series. There's a lot of belief in the Tech dugout."
Ben Fratti had Oakland Tech's only hit, a bad-hop single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the first inning. Zhi Mankin, who reached on an error in third, was the only Bulldogs runner to reach third base.
Otherwise, the Bulldogs (7-7) found Mueller almost unhittable. Dominique Williams also reached on an error for Oakland Tech in the fifth, but Mueller gave up just one walk, that to Anthony McDougle with two out in the seventh.
Mueller had a comfortable cushion to start with as the Cardinals led the game with four runs in the top of the first. Three of the first four batters -- Lincoln Chapman, Anthony Aguirre and Markus Min -- drew walks, and Vaughn Blue followed with an infield single to bring home the first run. A bases-loaded walk to Chris Calhoun, a Mueller fielder's choice and a bad throw brought home three more.
Min added a solo home run to center in the third, and the Cardinals (20-9) scored two runs in each the fourth and fifth.
