SAN LEANDRO -- There was only one appropriate way for San Leandro High to respond after its 20-victory season was rewarded with the No. 14 seed in the North Coast Section Division I baseball playoffs: win.

The Pirates did that Tuesday at San Leandro Ball Park, upsetting No. 3 seed and defending Division I section champion Amador Valley 3-1.

Kevin Nava pitched a four-hitter and San Leandro (21-6) scratched out its runs with small ball to move on to the quarterfinals Saturday at No. 6 Foothill, which beat 11-seed Deer Valley 6-2.

"This is very emotional," Nava said. "We feel great about it. We really wanted this win badly."

The Pirates were similarly unhappy when they received the No. 12 seed last year with the same 20-6 record, but a 9-1 loss to Heritage failed to make a statement.

"We got the 12 seed last year and the kids didn't understand why," San Leandro coach Mike Bungarz said. "My answer was "Go prove them wrong.' And we went out and didn't play well and got beat pretty handily. Same thing now, 'Go prove that we're better than a 14 seed.' This is historic for us."

San Leandro got a run in the first on an infield hit, wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and RBI groundout. Amador Valley (16-9) threatened in the bottom of the first when it loaded the bases, but Nava induced an inning-ending double play.

"I felt it," Nava said. "I knew it was coming. I needed that double play,"

The Pirates scratched across two more in the third on another groundout. This time, with pinch runner Matt Gonzalez on third and Isaias Montenegro on second, Ruben Ceja grounded to short. The throw home bounced off the catcher's glove as both runners scored.

The Dons pushed across their only run in the bottom of the third on a double by Steven Nice, but solid defense by the Pirates behind Nava helped him shut them down over the final four innings.

Berkeley 7, California 2: Pitcher Noah Bremer allowed just one earned run over seven innings to lead the No. 13 Yellowjackets (16-10) past the fourth-seeded Grizzlies (17-8) in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Berkeley finished with 11 hits, including a two-run homer by Xavier Williams that was a part of a four-run rally in the seventh inning.

Traynor finished with four strikeouts and also gave Newark Memorial its first run with an RBI triple in the fifth inning.
