Dublin made a strong impression in its first appearance in the boys state golf tournament.

Led by Jacob Solomon's 1-under 70, the Gaels finished in a tie for second place at the San Gabriel Country Club on Wednesday with a team score of 371.

Dublin, which was the third and final qualifier from the Northern California regional tournament two weeks before, also got a 71 from Chris Larsen.

Westlake-Westlake Village won the team title by nine shots over Dublin and Rancho Bernardo.

Acalanes' Will Brueckner was the highest individual local finisher, carding a 69 to tie for fourth place with Murrieta Valley's Sage Casaga. Evergreen's Justin Suh earned medalist honors with a 4-under 67.

Foothill's Tanner Hughes shot a 70 to finish in a tie for sixth with Solomon and three others to help the Falcons finish fourth as a team.

De La Salle's Josh McCarthy also qualified as an individual for the state tournament and finished with a 73.

Track and field

Heritage's Frank Kurtz has withdrawn from this weekend's state championships because of a knee injury, Patriots coach Kevin Bain said in a text message to this newspaper.

Kurtz, who won the boys 400-meter title last Saturday at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions in 47.66 seconds, said after his victory that he had tweaked his right knee two days earlier.

Kurtz, a Stanford-bound senior, has the seventh-fastest time in the state this season (47.35), according to PrepCalTrack.com. He placed fourth in the 400 final at the 2013 state championships.
