Castro Valley High senior Nate Moore has been named Gatorade's California boys track and field athlete of the year.
Moore won the long jump and triple jump at the CIF state championships earlier this month, becoming the first male athlete to sweep those events in consecutive years.
He won both events with national best marks. Moore's leap of 51-4 in the triple jump was the best wind-legal mark in the country this year and his jump of 25 8 3/4 in the long jump was tops in the nation in any conditions.
The Gatorade award recognizes high standards of academic achievement and character in addition to athletic excellence.
Besides his dominance on the track, Moore, who was raised by a single mother, has volunteered at Child, Family & Community Services as a teacher's assistant for the past two and a half years and maintains a B-average in the classroom.
He is headed to Oregon next year.
