When a football team has a dual-threat quarterback, it puts extra pressure on the defense.

That's the enviable position in which the James Logan High squad finds itself this season. Christian Leota, a UC Davis commit, can hurt a defense both with his passing and running.

But Colts coach George Zuber said that the 6-foot-3 senior's leadership skills are most important.

"Christian is a great team leader," Zuber said. "He is a big part of why this team is so tight. They really work hard for each other."

Teamwork is a very important component for any football team, and an example is the Logan defense. Even though there are not many returners, they are playing well together, Zuber said.

Ahmari Davis and Douglas Lealao are returning starters in the secondary. The defensive line is anchored by Aaron Griffith and a young linebacking corps is led by junior Brooks Miller.

Davis, a junior speedster, is also a big weapon offensively at running back. The receiving corps is spearheaded by Aaronjot Sekhon, Sean Simpson and Keonte Taylor. Lopiseni Tulua and Griffith return to anchor Logan's offensive line.

The Colts could see improvement as a team as the season progresses.

"We do have a lack of varsity experience ... and that's what we have to overcome," Zuber said. "I feel they are ready to step up to this level."

As is the case for most independent team every year, Logan faces a tough schedule. After opening at Tennyson on Aug. 30, the Colts face San Leandro, San Ramon Valley, Castro Valley, Bishop O'Dowd and De La Salle before four games against Mission Valley Athletic League teams to close the regular season. Logan's bye is after the San Ramon Valley game.

"Tough, tough. There's no breaks at all," said Zuber about the competition.

But the Colts can look forward to playing a game in Levi's Stadium. James Logan and De La Salle will face off there on Oct. 11.
