EAST PALO ALTO -- A 22-year-old man died and a boy was injured in a drive-by shooting Friday evening, police said.
Officers were called to the 500 block of Runnymede Avenue about 6 p.m. for a medical emergency; at the same time, the ShotSpotter audio system notified police of several gunshots around the same location.
East Palo Alto resident Gerardo Osegeura was standing in a yard near a home when a black vehicle pulled up, police said. Osegeura and someone in the vehicle exchanged words before someone in the vehicle opened fire, according to police.
Osegeura suffered a gunshot wound in his upper body. Paramedics attempted to treat him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy, whose age was not immediately disclosed by police, was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known Saturday night.
The car and its occupants fled the area after the shooting. Police did not release a description of the vehicle or the shooters.
