SAN JOSE -- Police have identified a man who died Friday and a relative suspected of killing him in the city's 23rd homicide of the year.

Daniel Torres, 50, of San Jose died at a hospital after being found injured in a fight on the 2900 block of Huff Drive in West San Jose. Police arrested Thomas Thompson, 40, on suspicion of murder. Police would not say how the men were related.

At 5:15 p.m., police were called to an apartment complex on Huff after a report of a fight in the courtyard among family members.

Because no weapons were reported, the call was considered "priority two," according to San Jose police Sgt. Amir Khalighi, and officers arrived about a half-hour later. Medical personnel who had also been summoned to the scene had already taken Torres to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 6:30 p.m.

Police wouldn't specify the nature of Torres' injuries but said they appeared initially to be the result of a physical fight.

Thompson, who was still at the apartment when police arrived, was arrested without incident.

Police said it appears that a fight between relatives spilled out of an upstairs apartment unit and into the courtyard of the complex, which is near the intersection of Interstate 280 and Highway 17 off Winchester Boulevard.

Friday night's killing happened just a street away from the city's 21st homicide of the year. Exactly a week before, Danny Brito, 35, was stabbed on Magliocco Drive in a slaying that police consider to be gang-related.
