One man was killed and another critically injured in a shootout Saturday night in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, a police sergeant said.

The slain man was Melsar Godoy, 24, of San Francisco, according to the medical examiner's office.

A police officer saw two groups of men shooting at each other around 9:40 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of O'Farrell Street, Sgt. Dennis Toomer said. The officer fired at one of the combatants but did not hit him; the suspect then fled on foot, and the officer caught him and took him into custody, Toomer said.

Godoy was dead at the scene, and another man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Toomer said.
