PITTSBURG -- A 52-year-old Pittsburg woman was shot to death Wednesday night, and her onetime husband has been arrested on suspicion of murder, police said.
Janice Easter was inside a home in the 100 block of Army Street suffering from more than one gunshot wound when police arrived about 11 p.m., Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said. Officers tried to resuscitate her at the scene but were unsuccessful, Raman said.
The homicide was the fourth of the year in Pittsburg.
The suspect, 51-year-old Kevin Easter of Pittsburg, fled the scene but was tracked down at an undisclosed location some time later, Raman said. He was booked into the County Jail in Martinez on Thursday and held on $1 million bail on suspicion of murder.
It was not known immediately if the two were divorced, but police did confirm that the couple were married at one time. Police described the relationship between the two as "on and off again."
Neighbors on Army Street, a community of modest homes near Pittsburg High School, said Janice Easter was friendly and outgoing. No one contacted Thursday afternoon knew if she was still legally married to Kevin Easter.
Kevin Easter has an extensive criminal history, Raman said, and was recently released on parole after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.
Police are still investigating the circumstances behind the shooting, Raman said.
