LIVERMORE -- Rangers at the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District will take visitors on a mushroom hunt and an after-hours hike in their January program at Sycamore Grove Park.
On Sunday, ranger Amy Wolitzer and Debbie Viess of the Bay Area Mycological Society will lead an expedition for wild mushrooms at the annual "Mushroom Madness" event, beginning at 1 p.m. Participants will crawl, wander and explore the park to see how many different types of fungi can be found. Wearing clothes that can get dirty is encouraged. Hunters can take only photos, however. The mushrooms must remain in their natural habitat.
For a unique look at the park at night, ranger Patti Cole will take adventurers on a Winter Night Hike on Jan. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. Hikers should prepare to hear and see owls, coyotes and other primarily nocturnal animals. The hike may be canceled due to poor weather.
There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee at either entrance to Sycamore Grove Park, and a $2 donation is requested to help support the programs. The park entrance is on Wetmore Road. For more information, call 925-960-2400.
