LIVERMORE -- Tour of California cycling race sponsor Amgen is accepting nominations for local cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, or advocates for its 2013 Breakaway from Cancer Champions initiative until Feb. 25.
One champion will be selected from Livermore, joining others in Amgen Tour of California cities Escondido, Santa Clarita, and Santa Barbara.
Champions will be granted special access to the 2013 Tour, award a jersey to a professional cyclist, be recognized on stage, and lead the Breakaway Mile, which is held to honor cancer survivors worldwide. The Breakaway Mile will be run at the starting line in Livermore on May 18.
Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Selected champions will be notified in April.

The eight-day Amgen Tour of California bike race begins in Escondido this year and will take place May 12 to 19.
