Fundraiser to benefit abuse programs
Tri-Valley Haven, a nonprofit providing shelter and counseling to survivors of domestic violence, will stage performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" at Las Positas College at 8 p.m. March 1 and 2.
Local theater veteran Eleisa Cambra is directing a cast of 24 local actresses -- ranging in age from 17 to 74 -- who are volunteering to be part of the show. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $15 for Las Positas College students. They can be purchased online at http://vaginamonologues.brownpapertickets.com. Cancer heroes sought for Amgen cycling race
Tour of California cycling race sponsor Amgen is accepting nominations for local cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, or advocates for its 2013 Breakaway from Cancer Champions initiative until Feb. 25.
One champion will be selected from Livermore, joining others in Amgen Tour of California cities Escondido, Santa Clarita and Santa Barbara. Champions will be granted special access to the 2013 Tour, award a jersey to a professional cyclist, be recognized on stage and lead the Breakaway Mile, which is held to honor cancer survivors worldwide. The Breakaway Mile will be run at the starting line in Livermore on May 18.

The eight-day Amgen Tour of California bike race begins in Escondido this year and will take place May 12 through May 19.
St. Michael's celebrates 100 years in Livermore
St. Michael's Catholic Church in Livermore is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2013. To commemorate the landmark event, the church will host a Centennial Celebration Mass and Dinner on April 27.
Mass starts at 3 p.m., followed by a dinner in St. Michael Hall, with seatings at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are already on sale and are available in the church rectory and at the St. Michael's School office, 345 Church St., Livermore. Math and science fun for middle school girls
Middle-school girls from the Tri-Valley will get hands-on experience with math and science careers at the Expanding Your Horizons Conference on March 2.
The daylong conference -- for girls in sixth through ninth grade from the San Ramon, Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton and Sunol school districts -- includes workshops, a group activity and a career fair. Young women will be able to meet with role models active in careers in math and science. The
conference begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Las Positas College gymnasium, 3000 Campus Hill Dr. Parents can also attend a workshop on college planning, academic requirements, financial aid and transferring to a four-year university.
Registration for this 34th annual conference is required, and can be done online at http://tveyh.org or by mailing in the registration form. There is a $20 charge per student and $15 for each parent. There is room for 300 students and 30 parents.
