WALNUT CREEK -- This year's annual Good Friday sunrise service and anti-nuclear protest at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is starting two days early.

Members of the Peace Advocacy Committee of the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center will lead a walk that starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday and will end at 7 a.m. on Good Friday at the weapons lab.

Walkers will travel 12 miles Wednesday and stay at Danville's Peace Lutheran Church. At 8:30 a.m. Thursday, the 16-mile trek to the Livermore Unitarian-Universalist Church will bring walkers to within two miles of the lab.

A nondenominational service sponsored by the Ecumenical Peace Institute on Friday will protest the production and proliferation of nuclear weapons and call for the lab's conversion to all peaceful purposes, said Bob Hanson, one of the organizers.

On the walk, protesters will beat on drums and carry signs. Their route includes Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Danville Boulevard and Camino Tassajara.
