OAKLAND -- A beloved Montclair yoga studio is throwing a party for old friends and new, as Mountain Yoga celebrates 10 years of success this weekend, beginning Friday.
"We're really throwing open the doors to the entire Montclair community," said studio owner Ann Dyer.
To celebrate, the studio is offering free mini-classes throughout the weekend, along with Bollywood dancing and a curry cook-off. The studio is calling the weekend festivities "Celebrate the Love."
Dyer, a singer who also trained in dance, bought Mountain Yoga from the original owners two years ago in order to have a central place to work from.
"As a freelance teacher, I wanted a sense of home," she said.
And she feels Mountain Yoga has become a home to others, too, with a devoted community of locals who enjoy Dyer's open philosophy of teaching and the studio. Unlike some other studios, Mountain Yoga offers a range of types of training, including Dyer's own specialty of chant. And besides yoga, the studio offers Ayurvedic healing, acupuncture and cranial-sacral therapy.
"My theory is 'whatever works,' " she said.
The weekend celebration includes a musical evening with renowned traditional Mexican music performer Arwen Lawrence. On Saturday afternoon, anyone can take a half-hour "mini-class" with Mountain Yoga faculty on topics from gardening to yoga for kids. But the main event is the Saturday night party, with a curry-cooking competition, Bhangra dance instruction, wellness treatments and raffles.
Dyer hopes people will come to see what yoga can do for them, no matter what age they are or how fit.
"Yoga is intended to make you feel better," she said.
