Q Halloween carries a double whammy of scariness, ranking as both the day with the highest number of child pedestrian deaths and one of the holidays with the highest number of DUI deaths. The number of deaths among pedestrians ages 5 to 14 is four times higher between 4 and 10 p.m. on Halloween than on any other evening of the year. A little planning plus some extra caution can keep everyone safe on our streets this year.

And some tips for people planning to drive on Halloween:
Q I've been riding my bike to my new office at Moffett Towers in Sunnyvale and use the bike overpasses on Borregas to go over Highway 101 and Highway 237. All the lights are off over 101 and only a few are on over 237. It's getting dark early now and functioning lights are needed!
A Sunnyvale light technicians discovered these outages last month during a routine inspection and have repaired about 20 of 80 lights. They hope to have all fixed within a couple of weeks. Jennifer-the-City-Spokeswoman added: "Even though we have someone inspecting in the field, we welcome this information from the public."
Q Are they planning on installing lights along the bike lane or sidewalk on Warm Springs Boulevard toward Osgood Road in Fremont? It can get scary there at night when commuting on my bicycle.
A Let there be more light. Bike lanes will run north and southbound with sidewalk and streetlights on the west side of Warm Springs. In addition, two new intersections near the new BART station will get signals. For more information, go to www.bart.gov/about/projects/wsx/index.aspx.
Q I rode my bike on the Guadalupe Creek Trail to the north end of the San Jose airport. The trail continues north from there, but a locked chain link fence stops you. When will it be opened?
A The trail is closed so pavement work can be completed, but the section from Interstate 880 to Trimble Road could open in a few days. Go to www.sjparks.org/Trails/TrailsList.asp for more information.
