BART police released a video of a Dec. 11 phone-snatching incident at the 12th Street/Oakland City Center Station as part of a campaign to remind riders to keep close watch on their possessions.

The video shows a man grabbing a phone from a person who is waiting for the train; he then flees up the escalator. The theft occurred around 1:30 p.m.

Less than an hour later, BART police officers arrested a suspect at the Powell Street Station. Trevel Thomas, 20, has been charged with robbery.

"We encourage passengers to hold their belongings close to their bodies and make eye contact with those nearby," said Era Jenkins, spokeswoman for BART Police. "Be extra cautious when standing near quick escape routes like escalators, stairs and train doors."

Other tips include keeping wallets and electronic devices in the zippered compartment of a bag; not carrying valuables in a back pocket; and being wary of "someone trying to create a distraction, such as dropping coins or bumping into you."
