Q Signs are up for some work near the tracks for the BART extension to the South Bay. Can you update us on construction coming up?
A Yep, and a lot will be happening over the next few days along Hostetter Road, Montague Expressway and Capitol Avenue.
Both directions of Hostetter between Lundy Avenue and Flickinger Avenue will be temporarily shifted to the north to accommodate the last phase of construction to trench the future BART system under the road. This will start this week and take about six months.
Montague will have intermittent lane closures and will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Milpitas Boulevard and Capitol Avenue in Milpitas next weekend for utility relocations.
And all traffic on Capitol Avenue between Trimble Road and Montague will continue to be shifted east, with only one lane open in each direction through November.
The extension from Fremont to Warm Springs could be done in two years, while the line from Warm Springs to Berryessa could be operating in 2017.
Q As a South Bay resident, I thank my lucky stars that I don't have to rely on our expensive, inconvenient and time-consuming methods of public transportation very often.
One exception, however, is going on Caltrain to events at the SAP Center. It's only four stops away from the Sunnyvale station near our home, and we can get to the venue in less than 20 minutes.
For Sharks games, there is always a special-event train available to depart a short time after the game ends. But why isn't this service available for all events there? I've heard that having a post-event train is left to the discretion of each event's promoter, but that doesn't seem fair to customers and it's certainly not consistent.
Sometimes we can take the train to a concert, other times we can't. Once, we took the train and incorrectly assumed that we'd be able to take one home, but we missed the last regularly scheduled 10:30 p.m. train because we were still inside the building, enjoying a show that went on for another half-hour.
If an event is expected to host, say, a minimum of 7,000 people, trains should be mandatory after it is done, regardless of who foots the bill. These trains are always packed, and I don't see why there is a difference between a sold-out house of hockey game attendees or concertgoers. It's incredibly frustrating.
This is a prime example why the average Peninsula/South Bay resident prefers driving than relying on public transportation. Who wants to make the time and effort to hop on a train for a night on the town and have a 10:30 curfew?
A First, a couple of clarifications. Event promoters don't make these decisions. Caltrain says it provides extra service to special events based on the equipment and crew available and on anticipated ridership demand. But it is unable to provide special service for every event, and there is no extra service after Sharks games.
The last weekday and Saturday train is scheduled to depart the Diridon Station at 10:30 p.m., or 15 minutes after the game ends. The train can be held as late as 10:45 p.m. If it were to depart later, passengers would miss the last connection with BART in Millbrae.
Q In Wednesday's paper, the picture of you and Mrs. Roadshow in the convertible going over the Bay Bridge looks suspiciously as though she doesn't have her seat belt over her shoulder. Doesn't look safe to me! ... Your skeptical co-worker who taunted you about your thinning hair is looking at the glass half full -- "with the wind blowing through my hair, except he said it should have read blowing through my thinning hair'." Increased fuel economy, due to less turbulence and drag. There's always a positive side to every situation. ... You are not setting a good example for all of us. Your front-page photo Wednesday showed that the head restraints on your convertible had been removed. Tsk-tsk. Very dangerous. Not illegal but not very wise for our Roadshow expert. ... Shame on you! In a convertible with no hat! At least Mrs. Roadshow protected herself from the sun.

A Tough crowd today! Mrs. Roadshow did have her seat belt strapped on correctly. Thinning hair and less drag works for me. Photographer Karl Mondon wanted head restraints removed so he could take video and photos. We should have put them back in when the bridge drive was completed but didn't. Karl also wanted me to remove my hat for photo reasons.
