Q Maybe this is a question for Home & Garden, but where can I find this ecologically sound, mow-free grass requiring minimal watering and no fertilizing now being used at interchanges like Tully Road and Highway 101?

Marvin Berkson

Foster City

A You are one of many wanting to know.

Q I'm so very thrilled about that lawn being a "mow-free" native grass. Now, where can I purchase that native grass blend? ... This seems like something that I and thousands of others would be interesting in knowing more about. Reduced mowing and water usage is what all Californians need for their lawns. ... I am intrigued by the grass mixture being used at 101 and Tully that you said rarely needs watering or mowing once established. Is it commercially available in homeowner-sized amounts? I hope, I hope.

Inez Creps, Nancy Fernandez, Thad Floryan, Nancy Burchett and many more

A It is. Caltrans recommends going to http://deltabluegrass.com/CaliforniaNativeSod.php for more information. The native sod is also being used on the 101-Capitol Expressway job and may be used at 101 and Embarcadero Road. It will go dormant in the winter and maintain a flowing meadow look, but will come back in the summer.

Q Last week I was on Highway 85 and there was an accident. A couple of miles from the accident and before there was any backup, a Caltrans sign indicated that two right lanes ahead were blocked. That meant only the carpool lane was open. Obviously, at some point, that would be the lane to get in to bypass the accident.

When is it legal, as a solo driver, to enter the carpool lane to get around an accident? I entered it after seeing the warning sign, and no one ticketed me, but is there a specific rule about this?

Kevin J. Cunningham

Foster City

A Technically, you can enter the carpool lane as a solo driver only if directed by police. But in this example, I doubt you would get a ticket if you made the move safely.

Q Who should I contact for repairs on Lawrence Expressway? There are some decent-size potholes and chunks of asphalt missing between Homestead Road and Benton Street, with a ton of cracks in both directions. Seems like just a few years ago there was a major resurfacing project.

Kevin Chung

A Lawrence was last resurfaced 10 years ago, and that was to last for five to seven years. There are plans to overlay the expressway between Homestead and Highway 237 late next year.

Q Wednesday as I came though one of the Caldecott tunnels, I saw multiple text signs overhead. What I could not believe was the sign asked drivers to text a "text address" for a test. Drivers were being asked to text while driving in the tunnel?

Dan C.

Oakland

A Yep. Caltrans was testing signs in bores 3 and 4, which will be turned on only if there is an incident in the tunnel. Said Ivy-the-Caltrans-spokeswoman: "We apologize for the error in messaging. This is indicative of why testing is so critical."
