FREMONT -- Mattson Technology reported a slump in sales and a wider loss for the company's third quarter that ended in September.

Mattson lost $6 million on sales of $20.4 million for the July-September quarter, the maker of semiconductor equipment said.

In the year-ago quarter, Fremont-based Mattson lost $2.3 million. Sales fell by 53.4 percent.

"Our continued progress in cost-reduction initiatives has enabled us to decrease operating expenses by 25 percent and improve our gross margin from the third quarter of 2011," Mattson CEO David Dutton said.
