Fremont police say they shot and killed a naked San Jose man who was chasing his wife while holding a knife Sunday night and refused officers' orders to drop the weapon.

The man has not yet been identified, though police say he is a 37-year-old San Jose resident.

At about 11 p.m., the wife's roommate called police to say the woman was being attacked by her husband, according to police. As officers arrived in the 4500 block of Central Avenue, they saw a woman fleeing the apartment and a naked man chasing her with a knife in his hand.

Fremont police say the officers demanded that the suspect stop and drop the knife, and when he refused they fired their weapons. The man was taken to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting have 3 and 20 years' experience and have been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, according to Fremont police.

The incident is being investigated jointly by the Fremont Police Department's Investigative Unit and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
