Community Thanksgiving Meal open to all
The Bay Area Rescue Mission, working with St. Paul's Episcopal Church, other local houses of worship and various Walnut Creek individuals, is organizing a Walnut Creek Thanksgiving Day Community Meal, and all are invited.
The meal will be served from 1 to 3 p.m. at Trinity Center, at St. Paul's Episcopal, 1924 Trinity Ave. in Walnut Creek.
About 200 people, including volunteers, are expected to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal in what head organizer Gary Kingsbury said is Walnut Creek's first such community meal in many years.
Kingsbury is Gary Kingsbury vice president of operations for the Richmond-based Bay Area Rescue Mission.

Run the Thanksgiving morning 'Turkey Trot'
The 20th Annual Forma Gym Walnut Creek Turkey Trot, a 5K and 10K run to benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano and local schools, starts at 8 a.m. at Civic Park.
Both the 5K and 10K courses will utilize Broadway and Main Street downtown; the 10K course extends north along the Iron Horse Trail to the Contra Costa Canal Trail.

1515 Restaurant's annual turkey giveaway Tuesday
More than 2,000 turkeys are expected to be given out Tuesday at the 1515 Restaurant and Lounge's annual turkey giveaway, with some destined for local shelters and food programs, and others to be given out at the restaurant starting at 10:30 a.m.
Last year, the line for these 10- to 15-pound birds started forming at 8:30 a.m., and the turkeys typically go fast, said Tony Del Santo, 1515's general manager. The restaurant is at 1515 N. Main St. in downtown Walnut Creek.
Downtown businesses hold sidewalk sale this weekend
The downtown's Semi-Annual Sidewalk Sale takes place this weekend, Nov. 17 and 18, at participating stores.
Look for balloons designating the participating businesses, which include Alina B, Atlas Men's Shop, the American Cancer Discovery Shop, As Seen on TV, Diva By Diva, Five Little Monkeys, Mancini's Sleepworld, Norf London, Patio World, SA Elite by Sports Authority, Title Nine and Wine Hardware.
This event will take place during participating businesses' regular store hours, which vary from business to business. Participating stores range from women and men's clothing and shoes to home furnishings and salons, and all will have bargains.

Diablo Ballet set to open 19th season
Diablo Ballet, the award-winning Walnut Creek-based dance company, begins its 19th season with a program Nov. 16 and 17 at the Lesher Center for the Arts with a program featuring Shakespeare, a Latin fair and a world premiere.
The California Premiere of "Lento a Tempe a Appassionato" by renowned choreographer Vicente Nebrada of Ballet Nacional de Caracas features the music of Alexander Scriabin performed live. Broadway choreographer Sean Kelly creates the world premiere of "A Swingin' Holiday," which mixes favorite holiday songs with swing dance and swing music, accompanied by a live 16 -piece big band under the direction of Diablo Ballet Music Director Greg Sudmeier.

'Scouting for Food' 2012 drive concludes Saturday
Area Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will collect nonperishable food from front steps and porches around Contra Costa County this coming Saturday as part of the Scouts' national "Scouting for Food" program.
The food collected is given to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano for its holiday food baskets.
An estimated 6,000 Contra Costa Scouts on Nov. 10 left door hangers asking residents to leave bags and boxes of food for pickup this Saturday, Nov. 17. Pickup takes place after 9 a.m.
