HERCULES -- A 23-year-old El Sobrante man died after his BMW slammed into a big rig early Sunday morning on Interstate 80 and burst into flames, police said.

The 2:20 a.m. crash in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Willow Avenue also left a passenger, a 21-year-old San Pablo man, with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities did not release the names of those involved in the crash.

Police said the 2005 BMW was traveling at "a high rate of speed" before hitting the big rig. The 42-year-old Castro Valley man behind the wheel of the truck and a 41-year-old Hayward man in the passenger seat were not injured, police said. The men in the big rig and the BMW were wearing seat belts.

Police did not release any further information. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
