Strong finish for Knights

  • Freshman Chloe Hansel took 16th to lead the Las Lomas High girls cross country team to a solid seventh place finish at the California Interscholastic Federation Division III championships. The Knights, who also got solid performances from Megan Wenzel and Emma Hight, were the No. 2 team from Northern California in Division III. All of Las Lomas' scorers were underclassmen.

    Spartans cruise in semifinals

  • The De La Salle High football team was firing on all cylinders in a 49-0 victory over Amador Valley in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals on Nov. 23. Tiapepe Vitale, Chris Williams and Das Tautalatasi powered the De La Salle running game while Michael Hutchings, Victor Egu, Andrew Buckley and Sumner Houston all had big games defensively to key the shutout.

    Cougars continue season

  • The Campolindo High girls volleyball team advanced to the Northern California Division III regional final by topping Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22 on Nov. 24. The Cougars' three senior captains, Annie Shurtz, Sophie Seiberth and Cassidy Abel, led the way. The top-seeded Cougars also defeated Shasta in three games in their opening round NorCal game.

  • Lady Bulldog Classic, girls basketball, Nov. 29-Dec.1 -- For the 21st year, the Alhambra girls basketball team will host the Lady Bulldog Classic. Acalanes, Monte Vista, Antioch and Concord are among the squads attending.

  • Clayton Valley vs. Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park, NCS football, Nov. 23, 7 p.m. -- The Eagles will meet the Cougars at Diablo Valley College for the NCS Division II title. Clayton Valley is riding an 11-game winning streak while the Cougars are unbeaten.

  • De La Salle vs. James Logan, NCS football, Nov. 24, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans will take on the Colts at Dublin High in the NCS Division I championship game. De La Salle is aiming for its 21st straight title while the Colts are looking for their first.

    Stars of the week

  • Danny Stalters, Northgate cross country -- Stalters finished his Northgate career by taking 14th place in the Division III boys race at the CIF championships at Fresno's Woodwark Park on Nov. 24. His time was 15:46.

  • Rachel Linden, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- Linden's 41 assists and three blocks helped the Knights get past Gregori-Modesto in four games in the first round of the NorCal Division II regional playoffs on Nov. 20. The Knights' season ended with a loss to Archbishop Mitty-San Jose in the regional semifinals.

  • Aidan Goltra, Campolindo boys cross country -- Goltra, a junior, won the CIF Division III state championship race on Nov. 24 at Fresno's Woodward Park. Goltra won the tight 3.1-mile race in 15:18.

  • Annie Marggraff, Acalanes girls cross country -- Marggraff placed eighth in the CIF Division III girls race on Nov. 24 in Frenso with a time of 18:22, the fastest time of any NCS runner in the Division III race.

  • Matt Schumann, De La Salle cross country -- The sophomore led the Spartans at the CIF championships, taking 14th in the Division I race with a time of 15:32 for the 3.1-mile Woodwark Park-Freno course on Nov. 24.

  • Annie Shurtz, Campolindo girls volleyball -- Shurtz recorded 29 kills and five blocks to help the Cougars beat Sacred Heart Cathedral in four games on Nov. 24 to advance to the NorCal Division III regional final.

  • Chris Williams, De La Salle football -- The junior quarterback had one of his best performances of the season, leading the Spartans to a 49-0 drubbing of Amador Valley in the NCS Division I semifinals on Nov. 23. Williams threw for 104 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another 65 yards.
