OAKLAND -- A three-time convicted drug dealer has been charged with murder in the fatal beating in January 2011 of a 62-year-old man in West Oakland, authorities said Thursday.

Nathaniel L. Davis, 33, of Oakland, is charged in the death of Eddie Jones, also from Oakland. He is scheduled to enter a plea Jan. 28 in Alameda County Superior Court. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

Police said Jones suffered fatal injuries when he was beaten about 10:50 p.m. Jan. 23, 2011 in the 1100 block of Center Street.

Sgt. Sean Fleming said police are not sure of the men's relationship or what the motive for the attack was.

Fleming said police were eventually able to identify Davis as the suspect through tips from citizens and physical evidence. He would not say what the physical evidence was.

A warrant was issued in August 2012 for Davis' arrest and he was arrested Dec. 27 in Oakland. He refused to talk to investigators.

Authorities confirmed Davis has three prior convictions for selling drugs. Two were in Alameda County; one in 2006 and the other in 1999. The third was in San Francisco County in 2008.
