FREMONT -- The public is invited to give its feedback Thursday on a proposed increase in the Tri-City area's water rates.
The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Alameda County Water District headquarters board room, at 43885 S. Grimmer Blvd. in Fremont.
The agency is proposing to hike rates for 2013, increasing the average customer's bill by nearly $7.50 per month, or about 17 percent.
The higher rates, expected to take effect Feb. 1, would fund the replacement of water mains and the seismic retrofitting of nearly one-third of the district's 800 miles of aging pipelines, agency officials said. The rate increase will generate about $8 million per year.
The agency provides water to 331,000 people living in Fremont, Newark and Union City.
