PINOLE -- A Pinole man entered a Safeway on Monday, told a cashier he was armed with a gun and wanted money from the drawer But before receiving the money, he gave the cashier another message: "I'm just kidding."

So say Pinole police, who arrested 50-year-old Arthur Fedelin on suspicion of attempted robbery after the scenario played out at the Safeway at 1421 Tara Hills Drive.

Police were called to the store at 5:36 p.m. after Fedelin approached a cashier and told her he was armed and wanted money from the drawer, Pinole police Cmdr. Peter Janke said. But before the cashier could get money out of the drawer, the man told her he was at all a joke and left the line, Janke said.

The man left the store as officers were taking their positions and was taken into custody without incident, Janke said. He did not have a gun and he took no money, Janke said. Nobody was injured.

Fedelin was taken to County Jail in Martinez, where he was being held on $50,000 bail.
