PEBBLE BEACH -- Tiger Woods isn't playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am this week, but his virtual self made the trip.
EA Sports, with an assist from Hunter Mahan, introduced its Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 gameplay enhancements, which will enable players to experience golf through various eras dating to the 1800s, including tackling a 1934 version of Augusta National in the "The Masters Historic Edition."
In their virtual trip, golfers will use retro clubs such as mashies, brashies, baffing spoons, jiggers and niblicks, and can match up with golfing legends such as Arnold Palmer.
"I think it's really cool," Mahan said on Tuesday of the new system. "To see the old guys, the old style of the game of golf and the way they were, that's really neat."
Mahan thinks the EA upgrade fits well with the experience at Pebble Beach and its great history.
"So many great players have played here and walked in these fairways," he said. "The course really hasn't changed much through the years, which is a really neat. It's really stood the test of time. It's cool to have the unveiling here. It works well together."
Mahan, who had an up-and-down 2012 season and finished tied for 15th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, said his goal is to jump into the top five of the rankings.
He won twice by April 1 last year, but his best finish in his next 16 starts was a tie for eighth, which he did twice. Mahan finished one spot shy of automatically qualifying for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
