Deer Valley now alone in first after big win

  • The Deer Valley High boys basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Bay Valley Athletic League after defeating Freedom 76-73 on Jan. 29. Entering this week, the Wolverines were 6-0 in league play and the Falcons were 5-1. The two teams will meet again on Feb. 21.

    Freedom girls win pivotal game

  • The Freedom High girls soccer team defeated Heritage 3-2 on Jan. 31 to take over sole possession of first place in the BVAL. Early in the second half, Clarissa Diaz scored to give Freedom a 3-1 lead, and goalie Tess Harrington had seven saves to hold off Heritage. The North Coast Section playoffs begin next week.

    Pittsburg shines at NCS wrestling meet

  • The Pittsburg High girls wrestling team finished third at the NCS Championships held at Pittsburg High from Feb. 1-2. The Pirates finished with 112 points, and will be sending two wrestlers to the state championships at Lemoore High from Feb. 22-23. In the 235-pound weight division, Pittsburg's Samantha Cruz placed first and in the 98-pound division, Camille Caoile took third. Antioch's Courtney Rouse will also be competing in the state championships, as she finished third in the 165-pound division.

  • Heritage at Liberty, girls basketball, Feb. 8, 5:30 p.m. -- Liberty will host and try to knock off the Patriots, who entered the week undefeated in BVAL play.

  • Freedom at Heritage, boys basketball, Feb. 12, 7 p.m. -- The Falcons travel to Brentwood to face the Patriots in a game both teams need to win to keep alive their league title hopes.

  • Los Medanos at Solano, women's basketball, Feb. 13, 5:30 p.m. -- Los Medanos looks to build on a 68-40 win over College of Marin on Feb. 1 when it takes on Solano in a Bay Valley Conference game.

    Stars of the week

  • Tess Harrington, Freedom, girls soccer -- Harrington made seven saves in a pivotal win over Heritage on Jan. 31. The freshman has also helped Freedom shut out 10 different teams throughout the season.

  • Samantha Cruz, Pittsburg, girls wrestling -- Cruz was the only Pittsburg wrestler to place first in her weight class at the NCS Championships on Feb. 1-2.

  • Kendall Smith, Deer Valley, boys basketball -- Smith scored 21 points to go along with eight assists in a crucial win over Freedom on Jan. 29. Smith also scored 26 points and hauled in 12 rebounds in a 66-63 win over Pittsburg on Jan. 31.
