Freedom reaches Division I semifinals The Freedom High boys soccer team (14-9-2) won its first two games of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. The Falcons defeated Berkeley 3-0 in their first round game and upset Pittsburg, the Bay Valley Athletic League champions, 2-0 in their second round game on Feb. 16. This is the first time the Freedom boys soccer team has reached the NCS playoffs.

Heritage girls perfect in league play The Heritage High girls basketball team (22-4) went a perfect 10-0 in BVAL play this season, racking up wins by double-digits in seven of its 10 league games. The Patriots will head into the NCS Division I playoffs with the momentum of a 14-game win streak. Heritage, the No. 1 seed in Division I, received a first-round bye and will play either Pittsburg or San Ramon Valley on Feb. 22.

On deck Heritage/San Ramon Valley at Deer Valley, boys basketball, Feb. 22, TBA -- Deer Valley earned an NCS Division I first round bye after clinching the BVAL title, and will host the winner of Heritage and San Ramon Valley. During the regular season, Heritage (20-6) was the only team to defeat Deer Valley in BVAL play, although star center Marcus Lee did not play in the game. Monte Vista at Freedom, boys basketball, Feb. 22, 7 p.m. -- Freedom (18-8) and Monte Vista (20-6) both earned a first round bye in the NCS Division I playoffs. They will square off on Feb. 22 in what should be an evenly contested match. Pittsburg/San Ramon Valley at Heritage, girls basketball, Feb. 22, 7 p.m. -- Heritage (22-4) earned the number one seed and a first-round bye in the NCS Division I playoffs. The Patriots will host the winner of the first round game between Pittsburg (17-9) and San Ramon Valley (15-11).
Stars of the week Jorge Cendejas, Freedom boys soccer -- Cendejas found the back of the net twice in a 2-0 NCS Division I quarterfinals upset over Pittsburg on Feb. 16. With the two goals, Cendejas increased his season total to 27. Chris Contreras, Freedom boys soccer -- Contreras racked up 10 saves in a 3-0 shutout over Berkeley, and 11 saves in a 2-0 shutout over Pittsburg. Contreras entered the week with eight shutouts on the season. Nzuzi Webster, Deer Valley boys basketball -- Webster scored 25 points in Deer Valley's 85-78 win over Freedom on Feb. 14. The win secured the BVAL title and an automatic berth to the NCS playoffs.
