Ygnacio Valley posts thrilling playoff win

  • The Ygnacio Valley High boys soccer team won an exciting North Coast Section Division II quarterfinal Feb. 16 against DVAL rival Northgate, winning the match in a shootout. Ygnacio Valley had a 3-0 lead at halftime before the Broncos tied the game in the late stages to send it into overtime.

    DLS wrestling team takes EBAL title

  • The De La Salle High wrestling team won seven individual titles to help capture the East Bay Athletic League championship on Feb. 16 at Foothill High in Pleasanton. The Spartans won the team title with 271.5 points, with Foothill (155.5) second and Livermore (144) third. De La Salle had a wrestler in 13 of 14 championship matches, and all of them qualified for the North Coast Section Championships Feb. 22-23 at Newark Memorial High. The Spartans have won four straight section titles.

    College Park wins DVAL wrestling title

  • The College Park High wrestling team claimed the team title at the Diablo Valley Athletic League championships on Feb. 13 with seven individual champions. The Falcons' Cory Campbell (287 pounds) and Anthony Urbina (147) won their finals by pin. Other College Park champions include Kaelan Kelly (108 pounds), Danny Croff (122), Marc Wilhelm (154), Matthew Zachary (162) and Grant Hamant (197).

    Campolindo soccer teams advance

  • Both the boys and girls soccer teams at Campolindo advanced to the semifinals of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs. The boys team earned a 6-0 first round win over Pinole Valley on Feb. 13, then beat Hayward 4-1 in the Feb. 16 quarterfinals to advance to the Feb. 20 semifinals against Ygnacio Valley. The Campolindo girls team beat Hercules 8-0 in the first round and Acalanes 3-0 in the quarterfinals, and hosted Piedmont on Feb. 20.

  • Girls state wrestling championships, Feb. 23, all day -- The state's top girls wrestlers meet at Leemore High in the Central Valley.

  • NCS wrestling championships, Feb. 23, all day -- Section champions will be crowned on the mat at Newark Memorial High.

  • NCS soccer finals, Feb. 23, times TBA -- Section championships for Division I and II on both the boys and girls sides will be decided.

    Stars of the week

  • Jelani Hardaway and Mike Harris, Diablo Valley men's basketball -- The duo led the Vikings to a 91-88 overtime victory over Cosumnes River College on Feb. 18. Harris scored 32 points while Hardaway hit four 3-pointers on his way to 25 points.

  • Dan Glascock, Acalanes boys soccer -- After being named national player of the week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Glascock continued his high level of production with a goal and assist in the Dons' 5-1 win over Piedmont Feb. 13 in the NCS playoffs.

  • Matt Nerland, Las Lomas boys basketball -- The junior made sure his teammates left with a win on senior night by scoring 20 points as Knights topped Acalanes 69-53 on Feb. 14.

  • Levi Russell, Las Lomas wresting -- Russell, a senior, pinned Vince Vigliezone in just 25 seconds to win the 145-pound title at the DFAL Championships Feb. 16 at Miramonte.

  • Shelby Salling, College Park girls basketball -- Salling's double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) helped the Falcons earn a 60-20 win over Mt. Diablo in their DVAL finale on Feb. 15.

  • Val Wirfel, Northgate girls soccer -- The junior netted two early goals as the Broncos beat Encinal 3-1 in the opening round of the NCS Division II playoffs on Feb. 13.
