Team of middle school students from Dorris-Eaton School in Walnut Creek and from Stanley Middle School in Lafayette are part of an upcoming regional competition of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science's National Science Bowl Saturday, Feb. 23 at Las Positas College in Livermore.

The winner of the regional competition will receive a fully paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Office of Science's National Science Bowl in late April and the winner of the national competition will win prizes for the team members and their schools. These prizes will be named at a later date.

The Office of Science began this competition to interest today's youth in pursuing careers in science and math.

    All five Mt. Diablo Unified School District high schools, including Northgate and Ygnacio Valley, have been recognized and honored for our high participation in 2012 in the Early Assessment Program.

    This voluntary program is designed to provide students, their families and high schools with early signals about students' readiness for college-level English and mathematics. MDUSD high schools were part of a small group of schools in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with the following participation rates:

  • Northgate High School, 99 percent

  • Ygnacio Valley High School, 97 percent

  • College Park High School, 98 percent
