Contra Costa Musical Theatre has a rather remarkable financial opportunity at hand. A donor has given the company a $15,000 challenge grant.

The anonymous donor will match every dollar donated to CCMT between now and March 31, up to $15,000. I'm sure CCMT could think of a good use for that potential $30,000!

    To contribute, go to www.ccmt.org.

Berkeley Rep hosts two free events in March beginning with Pulitzer Prize- winning author Lawrence Wright discussing his newest play, "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief" at 7 p.m. March 4.

Writers seem to be fascinated by Scientology, given the Oscar-nominated film "The Master" and now "Going Clear." Wright's play "Fallaci," about legendary Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci, receives its premiere at Berkeley Rep from March 8 to April 21.

The second free event takes place at 7:30 p.m. March 18, when NPR's Michael Krasny interviews the wonderful Rita Moreno about her new memoir.

With an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and two Emmys, Moreno belongs to a select group of performers who have won all four prestigious show business awards.

While tickets are not necessary for these free events, seating is limited. Donors to Berkeley Rep can reserve seats in advance. All others should come 30 minutes early for general-admission seating.

For more information, call 510-647-2949 or go to www.berkeleyrep.org.

When a friendship turns malicious, you can usually count on a good fight, some underhanded tricks or, in "A Case of Libel," a tension-filled court battle.

Henry Denker's drama is based on the 1950s libel case between journalist Quentin Reynolds and columnist Westbrook Pegler.

Reynolds, a celebrated war correspondent engages a well-known attorney, Louis Nizer, and files a libel suit against Pegler, who, according to Reynolds, not only attacks his reputation and personal life, but also his patriotism.

Directed by Kris Neely, "A Case of Libel" runs March 1-9, at the Impulse Gallery and Theatre, 329 Railroad Ave., in Pittsburg.

Stewart Lyle directs "Children of Eden" at Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito through March 10.

Call 510-524-9132 or go to www.ccct.org.

The company will also audition for "La Cage Aux Folles" from noon to 5 p.m. March 9, with callbacks March 13-14.

Christina Lazo directs with Evan Alparone as musical director.

The show runs June 21—July 21. Those interested should prepare 32 bars of an up-tempo piece and a ballad, and dress to dance.

For more information, contact CCCT's new artistic director Marilyn Langbehn at Marilyn@ccct.org.

Langbehn, who has been Cal Shakes Marketing/PR Manager for many years, has also directed a plethora of award-winning shows, and I'm sure she will bring a host of new ideas to CCCT.
