Police plan DUI saturation patrols
Albany Police Department will be patrolling for alcohol and drug-impaired drivers around the city on Aug. 23. The Driving Under the Influence Saturation Patrols, part of an ongoing traffic safety campaign, is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The department cites figures showing that "After falling dramatically for five straight years, figures for 2011 indicate that DUI deaths remained the same as 2010" when 774 DUI-related fatalities were reported statewide.
Community can provide library input at meeting
A town-hall meeting to discuss the future direction of the county library system and what it offers the community will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at El Cerrito City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Meetings are being held in each community with a county branch to get local input on needs and desires as the system goes through its strategic planning process on how it can better serve its various communities.
The meeting also comes as El Cerrito Library boosters are promoting efforts to build a modern library facility in the city.

Get on your bike and ride at free event
The free monthly Bike About Town outing in Albany will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 23, starting at Wheels of Justice, 1554 Solano Ave. The outings, held on the fourth Friday of the month, take a different route each time, just bring your pedal-powered conveyance and a helmet and be ready to set out after a brief talk on safety.
Rise and shine for free Sunday morning run
Run Around Town, presented by the Albany Recreation and Community Services Department, invites the community to its weekly outing at 8 a.m. Sunday starting from Suzette Crepe Cafe, 1226 Solano Ave.
There will be short and long runs available.
School district sets strategic plan town hall
The West Contra Costa School District is seeking feedback on draft strategic plan for 2013-18 and has scheduled a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 in the multipurpose room at El Cerrito High School, 540 Ashbury Ave.
The meeting will explain points in the plan and have small group working sessions to determine priorities for the next five years.
The plan is available on the district website, www.wccusd.net.

Comments will be considered as the plan is modified before going back to the Board of Education for approval in October.

City honored for financial reporting
El Cerrito has been awarded a "Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting" for by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report covering the last fiscal year.

Cleanup day Aug. 24 at Creekside Park
Friends of 5 Creeks is holding a Cerrito Creek work party from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 24.
There are light and heavy tasks available and a play structure is nearby for young children. Tools, gloves, snacks and water will be provided. Wear closed-toed shoes with good traction, long pants and sleeves are also recommended.

Walk and talk about pedestrian upgrades
El Cerrito is holding a guided outing from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 25 to explore ideas to make the city's northern side a better walking environment. The tour sets out from the Canyon Trail Park Art Center, 6757 Gatto Ave.
Discussion will include proposed bicycle and pedestrian improvements and urban greening strategies.

St. Mary's golf tourney registration starts
Registration is now open for Saint Mary's College High School's 29th Golf Invitational, the third Phil Doran Memorial Tournament, taking place Sept. 16 at the Richmond Country Club.
The $225 entry fee includes men's, women's, and senior flights; a barbecue lunch; and the 19th Hole silent auction, raffle, and reception. Sponsorships are also available and proceeds benefit the school's tuition assistance program.
For $25 per person, nongolfers are invited to attend the 19th Hole, which begins at 4:30 p.m.

Contra Costa Chorale to begin rehearsals
The Contra Costa Chorale and Orchestra are holding a first rehearsal on Aug. 26 for their fall 2013 concert, Masters of the Baroque. The nonprofit chorus is "open to singers of various ages, backgrounds, and musical experience."
The rehearsal at Hillside Community Church, 1422 Navellier St. in El Cerrito, starts with registration at 6:30 p.m. and rehearsal at 7 p.m.
Rehearsals, led by Cindy Beitman, will continue from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, with special rehearsals such as sectionals from 9:30 to 10 p.m.
